The following appeared in a letter from a firm providing investment advice for a client.
"Most homes in the northeastern United States, where winters are typically cold, have traditionally used oil as their major fuel for heating. Last heating season that region experienced 90 days with below-normal temperatures, and climate forecasters predict that this weather pattern will continue for several more years. Furthermore, many new homes are being built in the region in response to recent population growth. Because of these trends, we predict an increased demand for heating oil and recommend investment in Consolidated Industries, one of whose major business operations is the retail sale of home heating oil."
Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.
根据上面提出的解决方案,assumption应为两处:
①天气预报员预测未来几年的天气情况 (这个点有很多同学理解成了fact,要注意这句话的主观性);
② case后一句话的前半句,“we predict an increased demand for heating oil”
①below-normal temperature—> frigid enough to consume more heating oil? —> unwise investment when there is no significant demand
②other possible ways to heat —> decreased demand for heating oil —>difficulty in scrambling market share, consider investing on other companies?
③growth of population is significant? / recent tend is continuous ?—> the continuity of increasing demand of heating oil is questionable—> too hasty to invest before detecting future scenario.
难点三: 知道写什么,不知道如何写
解决方案: 注意学习模仿推导性的语言怎么措辞,以及信息点衔接时如何巧妙搭配并列和递进的技巧。
具体段落演示如 下:
An increased demand for heating oil is predicted.. (把事实当成让步的部分,引出逻辑错误,信息呈现紧凑—>) Though this area experienced 90-day below-normal temperature, it is uncertain whether the temperature was low enough for customers to consume more oil to heat.(点明assumption推导argument难以达成的具体原因—>) Lacking adequate demands for heating oil, the investment on CI is unwise. Moreover, (还是采取了先让步的方式,信息衔接自然流畅—>) albeit it is optimistic to hear the population has grown,it does not necessarily mean the growth is significant, thus the increase of the demand is questionable. (递进的衔接方式,注意找到前后两个点之间的联系—>) Assuming this demand is of significance, the recent trend is possible to discontinue in the near future, making investors suffer from discontinuous earnings. . (继续递进一次—>) When all these worries above could be ruled out, it is still doubtful whether oil is still prioritized as heating fuel in new homes. If there are multiple ways available to heat there, the investment on CI could be unadvisable as larger market share is difficult to scramble.. The aforementioned flaws make the assumption unconvinced, the argument based on which is thus dubious.
