It’s no fun to get homesick. You might be out having a great time on the adventure of a lifetime, but homesickness can make all that fun come crashing down. Lots of people have lots of different ideas on how to get over being homesick, but I believe the best way is to make friends in the place you’re staying.
First off, it’s important to stop yourself from just sitting around and thinking about home all day. That’s why people get homesick. They don’t feel homesick when they’re out exploring some new place. Instead, they feel homesick when they’re sitting in their hotel on a quiet night with no plans and they start to think of how nice and comfortable it would be to go back home. Making new friends cures this. Your life in your new place will feel more active so you won’t be sitting around thinking of home all the time. After you’ve made some good friends in your new place, soon that place will also start to feel like home.
Secondly, making new friends gives you a support team, and that’s incredibly important. Really bad homesickness can feel a lot like depression. It makes you think about all the negative things in life and causes you to give up on your goals. If you haven’t made new friends, there will be no one to pull you out of this mood. If you’ve got friends there, however, you’ll have a support team to notice that you’re feeling down, and they’ll do what good friends always do: help you feel better.
Finally, it’s just fun to have good friends, and fun defeats homesickness. You won’t have time to feel homesick when you’re out partying with your cool new crew. For example, I studied a year abroad in Italy last year. The excitement of travel had worn off after two weeks of living there and I just felt like I wanted to go home where life was comfortable. However, I made some new friends and we spent literally every day together. I think we all felt a little homesick, and we all needed a group of friends to have fun with. We began exploring the city and trying new restaurants, and we had a great time. After that, I’d go for days without even thinking about home because I was too excited for my next day in Italy.
In the end, the best way to get over homesickness is to make the best of where you are in your new place. And the best way to do that is to make some great new friends. So get out there and have some fun!
