was opening 我倾向于理解成普通的过去进行时，因为有很多的shops，他们早上是一家家开的，这个过程看成那些商店正在一家家开店营业。

window display 窗口展示，固定搭配。had been doing类似于现在完成进行时，过去完成进行时，有从过去一直持续的意味。

stop在这是名词相当于station。 stay on the wheel用了指代修辞，用轮子指代汽车，所以想表达的其实是stay in the car。with black stocking over their faces 也是一个with 名词 介词短语组成的独立主格结构。

go on 继续，这里理解成happening更合适。furniture是不可数名词，所以不用复数，虽然是扔了不只一件家具(chairs, tables)，非要用复数，就把furniture换成pieces of furniture。

over 结束。all 表示完全，all over 彻底结束，整个结束，all dark night 漆黑的夜。scramble 爬。move off挪动，在这理解成逃走。at a fantastic speed 以极快的速度，这里的fantastic 和奇幻梦幻没什么关系。
Just as it was leaving, Mr. Taylor rushed out and ran after it throwing ashtrays and vases, but it was impossible to stop the thieves.
