Why Living Off Campus Is Popular?

Why Living Off Campus Is Popular?(校外租房何以流行?)
1.学生校外租房住宿较普遍;
2.校外租房住宿的原因;

Nowadays living off campus enjoys great popularity among college students. Why, then, do students do so when they are provided with very modern apartments and good services on campus? The reasons can be listed as follows.

First, living off-campus can relieve the student from time consuming and energy consuming trivialities. Since people from different places have different personalities, habits, and interests, etc, some students think that it is difficult for them to get along with their pals. If they live off-campus, they don't have to spend time worrying about and thinking of how to get along with their roommates. In this way, they will have more time for their studies. Secondly, living off-campus can offer them a lot of freedom. Freed from the regulations of the university, they can do whatever they want in whatever time they like. For example, they can stay up late, reading books or surfing on the Internet. Lastly, living off campus can give them more privacy. If they live in a dormitory, they have no "human rights" so far as privacy is concerned.

I think living off-campus has both its benefits and shortcomings. If we live off campus we will not have the chance to experience the rich and colorful social life on campus. Away from our classmates, we will not have the chance to learn how to communicate with those who have divergent opinions. We will lose the chance to learn to cooperate with others.

Competition and cooperation

Competition is a common phenomenon in our society . We compete when we play games, we try to do better than others in our study, and there is constant competition for jobs, fame, wealth and so forth. Therefore,we can say that, in a certain sense, competition is one of the motive forces of the development of our modern society.

It is often believed, that competition and cooperation are in opposition to each other. Some people stress competition, without which, in their eyes, there is no responsibility, no drive and ultimately, no progress. Others advocate cooperation whatever they do. They are of the opinion that the dependence of people on one another has increased, without which the society we live in can not keep going smoothly. In reality, we find that in many cases competition goes hand in hand with cooperation. Lets take a football game for example. During the game, one team is competing against the other, but each member of the team must cooperate with his teammates. Otherwise, they would lose the game no matter how skillful each individual player might be. It is clear that competition has much to do with cooperation.

As far as Im concerned, I do not agree with the view that competition and cooperation are always in conflict with each other. In my opinion, while advocating competition. We should never forget cooperation. In our social life, cooperation is especially necessary because most work is fulfilled with or through other people. So Ive come to the conclusion that competition are equally important.

Write an essay of 160—200 words based on the following bar chart. In your essay, you should first describe the bar chart, then interpret its meaning, and give your comment on it.

You should write neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2. (20 points)

As is apparently betrayed in the bar chart above, at present university students suffer from psychological problems of various kinds, among which spiritual depression, miscellaneous problems, and suicide-committing top the list. What the chart reveals is indeed thought-provoking.

The implied meaning of the chart above can be briefly stated as follows. On the one hand, university students are encountering more psychological problems than ever before. The fact can be attributed to many factors. Most university students are overloaded with study and haunted by employment pressure. As young and inexperienced people, they are also facing emotional dilemma and trial of human interrelationship. Besides, some students are in a financial predicament. On the other hand, necessary psychological work for university student is a must for the time being. It is quite shocking that at least forty percent of university students suffer from spiritual depression. The very fact should not be neglected. Effective countermeasures must be taken to reverse the current grim situation. In sum, the psychological problems should be put on our agenda.

In my view, great efforts must be made so as to ensure the healthy growth of university students. To begin with, we must have a good understanding the necessity of psychological instruction and guidance among university students. What’s more, government departments at different levels and related organizations should make joint efforts to create a more relaxing environment for university students. Only in this way can university students develop well both physically and psychologically.

Good Manners

Good manners are very important in the communication of daily life. Everyone likes a person with good manners. But what are good manners? How does one know what should do and what should not do when trying to be a good - mannered person?

Well, here are some common examples. A person with good manners never laughs at a people in trouble. Instead, he (she) always tries to consult or offer help to the person. When he (she) takes a bus and sees an old man or a sick man, he (she) always gives his (her) seat to him. He doesn't interrupt other people when they are talking. He uses a handkerchief when he sneezes or coughs. He does not spite in public places.

Ideas of what are good manners are not always the same in different regions. For example, people in Western countries usually kiss each other to show their greetings, whereas in China, kissing in public is something of unusual and sometimes be regarded as impolite to somebody else. So it is important to know what is regarded as polite and impolite before you go to a region. But remember that it is always right to be kind and helpful to othe

Tobacco smoke is killing thousands of people every year and injuring hundreds of thousands more every day like children. Federal officials released a massive report that is sparking renewed efforts to ban smoking in public places. Secondhand smoke has been classified as known carcinogen, this classification is only shared by ten other pollutants.(These pollutants include benzene, asbestos and smoke inhaled directly from cigarettes. Govenor Mario Cuomo has asked the Legislature to outlaw smoking on school grounds and antismoking advocates said they would target airlines and fast food chains for similar bans.

The risk of developing lung cancer due to tobacco smoke is 1 in 1,000 for nonsmokers and 2 in 1,000 for nonsmoking spouses of smokers. However, the risk for smokers is 70 in every 1,000.

Passive smoking causes between 150,000 and 300,000 cases of bronchitis, pneumoia and similar infections in children less than 18 months old and worsens the condition of between 200,000 and 1 million asthmatic children. It is pointless to allow people to smoke in one part of a restaurant and not to allow it in another when eventuallly the nonsmoking section breathes in the smoke.

As is illustrated in the picture, a student is excessively fond of computer game so that he can not see anything suddenly. Accordingly, the fact that students being on the rise spent their spare time playing computer games such as CS has aroused great concern and should be given enough consideration. There is no doubt that its symbolic meaning that it is imperative to prevent them from indulging in CG ought to be taken seriously.

To account for the above-mentioned case, several effects arisen from CG should be put forward. To begin with ,taking to CG too much impair players’health especially eyes, just like being revealed in the picture. In addition, the growing number of students neglect their studies, idle away their time and even commit crimes thanks to CG., which is threatening situation we are unwilling to see. No better illustration of this idea can be thought than the example as mentioned below, a student, who had wanted to play CG but had little money ,made a reckless move to waylay and rob. CG, in some sense, is just like Pandora’s box, which gives rise to some undesirable results unexpectedly. Therefore, no issue is as crucial to individual and national survival and prosperity as bringing CG under control in China.

From what have been argued above , it is necessary that some effective steps be carried out to check CG. On one hand, it is demanding for the government to make law to ban CG full of sex and violence on sale. On the other hand, we should assume our responsibilities and spare no effort to bring home people the awareness of harms concerning CG. Only by undergoing these measures, can we make our youths live in healthy life style, which has just gone to the heart of building up the cordial society .

Examinations Exert a Negative Influence on Education

We might marvel at the progress made in every field of study, but the methods of testing a person's knowledge and ability remain as primitive as ever they were. It really is extraordinary that after all these years, educationists have still failed to devise anything more efficient and reliable than examinations. For all the pious claim that examinations test what you know, it is common knowledge that they more often do the exact opposite. They may be a good means of testing memory, or the knack of working rapidly under extreme pressure, but they can tell you nothing about a person's true ability and aptitude.

As anxiety makers, examinations are second to none. That is because so much depends on them. They are the mark of success or failure in our society. Your whole future may be decided in one fateful day. The moment a child begins school,he enters a world of sharp competition where success and failure are clearly defined and measured. Can we wonder at the increasing number of drop-outs, young people who are written off as utter failures before they have even begun a career? Can we be surprised at the suicide rate among students?

A good education should, among other things, train you to think for yourself. The examination system does anything but that. What has to be learnt is rigidly laid down by a syllabus, so 'the student is encouraged to memories. Examinations do not motivate a student to read widely, but to restrict his reading; they do not enable him to seek more and more knowledge, but induce cramming. The most successful candidates are not always the best educated; they are the best trained in the technique of working under pressure.

College Pressure

I see two kinds of pressure working on college students today: economic pressure, parental pressure. It is easy to look around for rebels-- to blame the colleges for charging too much money, the parents for pushing their children too far. But there are no rebels, only victims.

The pressure is heavy on students who just want to graduate and get a job. If I were an employer I would rather employ graduates who have this range and curiosity than those who narrowly pursued safe subjects and high grades. I know incalculable students whose inquiring minds cheer me. I like to hear the play of their ideas. I don't know if they are getting A or C, and I don't care. I also like them as people. The country needs them, and they will find satisfying jobs. I tell them to relax. They can't.

Nor can I blame them. They live in a brutal economy.Today it is not unusual for a student, even if he works part time at college and full time during the summer, to increase to 5, 000 in loans after graduation. Encouraged at commencemerit to go forth into the world, he is already behind as he goes forth. How could he not feel under pressure throughout college to prepare for this day of reckoning?
Along with economic pressure goes parental pressure.Inevitably, the two are deeply integrated.
Poor students! They are caught in one of the oldest webs of love and duty and guilt. The parents mean well: they are trying to steer their sons and daughters toward a secure future. But the sons and daughters want to major in history or classics or philosophy-- subjects with no "practical" value.Where's the payoff on the humanities? It's not easy to persuade such loving parents that the humanities do indeed pay off. The intellectual faculties developed by studying subjects like history and classics are just the faculties that make creative leaders in business or almost any general field.

Luckily for me, most of them got into their field by an indirect route, to their surprise, after many roundabout ways. The students are startled. They can hardly conceive of a career that was not preplanned. They can hardly imagine allowing the hand of God or chance to nudge them down some unforeseen trail.

Honesty Is Gold

Honesty means speakingthe truth and being fair and upright in act. He who lies and cheats is dishonest.: Those who gain fortunes not by hard labour but by other means is dishonest.

Honesty is a good virtue. If you are honest all the time, you'll be trusted and respected by others. A liar is always looked down upon and regarded as a black sheep by the people around. Once you lie, people will never believe you even if you speak the truth.

However, in the tide of commodity economy today, it seems that more and more people believe in money at the sacrifice of honesty. To them, among such things as health, beauty, m6ney, intelligence, honesty, reputation and talent, honesty is the only thing that can be east away. They don't understand or pretend not to understand that honesty is the biggest fortune humans own, and that it is the prerequisite for doing everything well. I think these people areto be pitied.

In short, honesty is gold. Honest, your reputation will become great;dishonest, your name will be spoiled and your personality degraded. Therefore, we should never make such an excuse as "A little dishonesty is only a trifle thing. We should eradicate immediately the seed of dishonesty once it is sowed in our minds.

Happiness

What is happiness? Different people have different ideas. Some people are rich; they think they are happy. Other people have many friends, so they feel happy. Still others are happy because their lives are meaningful.

Happiness attracts(吸引) everyone. For children, happiness often suggests eating something good or playing with toys. For a stamp collector, stamps bring more delight than meals. And for a scientist, a discovery or an invention rather than anything else gives him greatest satisfaction.

There was once a beggar who was always happy. The king saw him and wondered why he was so happy because he was so poor. However, the king could have whatever he wanted; yet he himself was not happy at all. Thus we can see one’s happiness doesn’t depend on whether he is rich or poor. Happiness is a state of mind. As long as one thinks he’s content and satisfied, he is happy.

As everything exist only because its opposite(对立的), happiness exists only when pain exists. Just as a person who does not know failure never knows success, a person, who has not experienced suffering or sadness never knows what happiness means.

Happiness always promises (允诺) a hope by which people go on living. When they come to the point of losing hope because they have suffered a great deal, it is often the time when happiness comes that will give them the courage and desire(渴望) to live.

Cheer up and be happy. Happiness is not far from you. It’s just around you. Try to grasp(抓牢) it and enjoy it.

Self-confidence

There are many factors that can contribute to a person’s success in life. Whether he is at school or at work, a person is more likely to succeed if he is hard-working, honest, intelligent, responsible, and so on. But of all the possible characteristics that can affect one’s success, I believe self-confidence to be the most important for the following reasons.

The first reason is that when a person has self-confidence he believes in himself. He believes that he can and will succeed, and this gives him the courage to try new things. In order to be successful we must be willing to take some risks, so having self-confidence is very important. Another reason is that a confident person rarely gives up. When he fails he tries again and again until he wins. A final reason is that confident people are not afraid to show off their achievements. This is not to say that they should brag, but that they should gracefully and confidently accept the compliments of others. When their achievements are noticed more by others at school or work, they are more likely to succeed.

In short, I believe self-confidence to be the most important factor in success. It enables people to take risks, try again when they fail, and enjoy their accomplishments when they win. With these abilities, a confident person can succeed easily at school or work.

Book Knowledge vs. Experience

Knowledge can be acquired from many sources. These include books, teachers and practical experience, and each has its own advantages. The knowledge we gain from books and formal education enables us to learn about things that we have no opportunity to experience in daily life. We can study all the places in the world and learn from people we will never meet in our lifetime, just by reading about them in books. We can also develop our analytical skills and learn how to view and interpret the world around us in different ways. Furthermore, we can learn from the past by reading books. In this way, we won’t repeat the mistakes of others and can build on their achievements.

Practical experience, on the other hand, can give us more useful knowledge. It is said that one learns best by doing, and I believe that this is true, whether one is successful or not. In fact, I think making mistakes is the best way to learn. Moreover, if one wants to make new advances, it is necessary to act. Innovations do not come about through reading but through experimentation. Finally, one can apply the skills and insights gained through the study of books to practical experience, making an already meaningful experience more meaningful. However, unless it is applied to real experiences, book knowledge remains theoretical and, in the end, is useless. That is why I believe that knowledge gained from practical experience is more important than that acquired from books.

In recent years there has been a dramatic rise in the cell phones, which are now essential to millions of people as a convenient form of communication. In 2004 the number reached 315,000,000, with an average annual increase at 57,500,000. 

Some people can now no longer imagine life without their cell phones. The fact that they are so popular proves that they are useful and convenient. Cell phones enable people to easily and quickly communicate with one another; wherever you are, you can instantly reach somebody. Cell phones eliminate thetrouble of not being able to meet someone in person, and therefore increase business's efficiency. 

Mobile phones necessarily also harbor disadvantages. The radiation such phones emit is hazardous to one's health. Furthermore, if people become too reliant on the use of cell phones, our face to face skills may decline. Any new invention has its drawbacks, and such negative aspects cannot always diminish its popularity. Despite the negative effects of television, for example, the number of people who own televisions continues to grow at a tremendous rate. This is also the case with mobile phones. People won't stop eating just because of the risk of choking. In addition, the swift development of science and technology will likely eliminate the hazards cell phones may cause. One can safely predict, therefore, that with the introduction of new techniques, mobile phones will have more applications and become even more appealing to customers.

The information age

“Knowledge is power.” This is more obviously true with the advent(到来) of the information age. With the rapid development of science and technology, man’s knowledge is increasing very quickly. More and more books and scientific papers are published every year. It is said that the total of man’s knowledge doubles every ten years. Besides, information spreads very quickly through television and computer networks, and people in different countries can share their knowledge and information in a fantastic(惊人的) short period. Like population explosion, information explosion in our times.

At the beginning of the industrial revolution, a country's comparative(相对的,比较的) advantage depended largely on the natural resources endowed(天生具有) by nature. Then, people experienced several phases(阶段) in industry revolution: the primary industry(agriculture), the secondary industry(manufacturing 工业), and the tertiary(第三的) industry(服务). Now, we are in the fourth industry stage----the information industry.

It is argued that in future people should no longer be classified(分类的) as white collars(衣领) or blue collars, but rather as knowledge or non-knowledge workers. The knowledge workers can not only read and write, and perform rote(死记硬背) tasks, they must meet the basic requirements(需要) of computer literacy(读写能力) and constantly(不断地) conceive(想象,构想) new way to match(相适合) the changing demands of increasing productivity(生产率,生产力).

It is people mastering the most advanced knowledge who will take the lead. Systems developers(开发者), computer scientists and programmers, management analysts and inventors are in most demand in the industry countries.

The challenge(挑战) facing every country is to resuscitate(复苏) its investment(投资) and training. The only way to get greater knowledge is though education and training. Knowledge, like capital(首都) and material resources, has become an essential(不可缺的) factor of production. Therefore, the educational system of a society ought to enable its members to make a rapid transition(过渡) to adapt to the knowledge-based war. Otherwise, that society will inevitably(不可避免的) lag(落后) behind.

Traveling with a Companion

Traveling can be wonderful. It introduces us to new experiences, broadens our minds and helps us relax. However, not everyone likes to travel in the same way. Some people prefer to travel alone so that they can do what they like during their trip without having to worry about anyone else. Others like to have a companion to share the experience with. I am one of the latter, because I believe that traveling with someone has many advantages.

When I travel with a companion, I have someone with whom to share what I experience. We can talk over the day’s events and discoveries, and this will make them more interesting. In addition, it is often comforting to have a familiar person around when we are in a strange environment. When I am traveling in a foreign country, I may be unable to speak the language or may be confused by the local customs. With a travel companion, I will always have someone to talk and share my feelings with. Finally, a travel companion can make the journey easier and safer. We can help each other to take the journey easier and safer. We can help each other to take care of our bags and get information, as well as keep each other company while waiting in long lines.

To sum up, I prefer to travel with a companion rather than travel alone. I believe it adds enjoyment and comfort to may trip. And when we return from our journey, my friends and I can share our wonderful memories.

A cry for Nature Conservation

As is depicted in the picture entitled “cries from our descendants”, a boy is calling on his ancestors — citizens today throughout the world — to ensure a better environment and a greater abundance of natural resources for future generations. With a forced smile on the face, he is crying bitterly and desperately. Such a scene can just put us deep in thought.

The drawer of the picture intends to force us to ask ourselves some very thought provoking questions concerning nature conservation. Are we willing to be more conservative in our life requirements, and are we willing to moderate our use of the world's resources for our descendants? Can we, in fact, reduce our consumption of petroleum, coal and electricity, in order to reduce the pollution and environmental pressures created by excessive energy use and to allow others to live a better life? Are we willing to spend more money for pollution control and environmental restoration? Are we willing to devote more effort to recycling? Can we moderate our demand for fat rich diets and super processed convenience food? These are some of the central issues of the presentday world, and ones on which the quality of present and future environments may depend.

As citizens in the modern world, it is our duty to give thought to the living environment and conditions of our offspring. We must take positive actions to remedy the worsening situation, which is sadly threatening to ruin every corner of the world. Only in this way can the boy stop crying and show some respect to his ancestors.

Wealth and happiness

Wealth has always been what some people long for. It is true that most of them try to acquire(取得) wealth(财富) by means of honest labor. Their efforts contribute to the welfare(幸福,福利) of society and at the same time to the accumulation(累积) of their wealth. This brings them happiness.

There is no doubt that wealth brings happiness especially in modern society, where various kinds of modern conversation, new fashions and entertainments make their appearance with each passing day. These can improve a person’s life he or she has money to buy them.

But wealth does always not go hand in hand with happiness. Wealth may encourage those weak-willed person to be addicted(沉溺于某种) to some harmful habits such as drug taking or gambling(赌掉),and bring about their own ruin(毁灭). Also a person may lose his reason and go astray(迷路) if he is passionately(热情地) devote to seeking wealth. Therefore, one can never count on wealth to achieve happiness.

Communication

The world we are living in is amazing(令人吃惊的). There are countless living things. How can they live harmoniously(调和地)? The answer is communication.

Communication, of course, doesn’t need to be in words. We can talk to each other by a smile, a frown(皱眉), a shrug(耸肩) of our shoulders, and a gesture(手势) with our hands. Shaking hands is a very common gesture, which is performed both on initial(开始的, 最初的) greeting and departure(出发). We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary(词汇) of songs, sounds, and movements. Bees dance their signals, flying in certain pattern(模式) that tell other bees where to find nectar(【植】花蜜) of honey(甘美的).

Can plants talks? Yes---but not in words. We have reasons to believe that trees do communicate with each other. Not long ago, researcher learned some surprising things. First, a willow(柳树) tree attacked in the woods by caterpillars(毛虫) changes the chemistry of its leaves and made them taste so awful that the caterpillars go disgusted(厌烦地) and stopped eating them. Then, ever more astonishing(令人惊讶的), the tree sent out special vapors(水汽)---an alarm signal stimulating(刺激) its neighbors to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make them less tasty(【口】美味的)

Communication is so important in the nature world. As human beings we should communicate with each other to make the earth peaceful.

The Media and Famous People

In almost every form of media, including television, newspapers and magazines, a great deal of attention is paid to the personal lives of celebrities. It seems that the public cannot get enough of this kind of news. However, I believe that the media have a responsibility to present a balanced view of the world, as well as respect the lives of public figures. Therefore, I believe that the media pay too much attention to the personal lives of famous people.

For people who are fascinated with the lives of public figures there are some forms of media devoted exclusively to this topic. They can satisfy their curiosityby buying fan magazines and watching TV shows devoted to entertainment news. The general media should present all types of information because people have different interests. Furthermore, the practice of dwelling on the private lives of celebrities can lead people to pay more attention to these matters than they otherwise would. Perhaps most importantly, the media should respect the privacy of every individual, including public figures. They may have chosen to be in the public eye, but that does not give the public the right to know everything about them. Moreover, many stories about celebrities are untrue; they are only gossip reported to increase sales of magazines and other media. They are unfair to the famous and mislead the public.

For all of these reasons, I believe that the media should pay more attention to matters other than the private lives of public figures. In this way, they can appeal to a wider audience and encourage people to develop other interests. In my opinion, the media currently pay too much attention to the private lives of public figures.

Todays Luxuries Are Tomorrows Necessities

By "luxury", we mean "a pleasant and often expensive thing that is not necessary". From a historical point of view, things which Were a luxury when they first came into being all became necessities later. When the electric bulb was first invented in the U.S., it was such a luxury that only government bodies could afford to use it. Nowadays, however, it has reached every part of the world. It is the same case with telephone, TV, and a lot of others, which were all luxuries years ago.

Anything, no matter how luxurious it is, will become a necessity when it is widely used. This is true of many of the present luxuries, including mobile phones, cars, computers and many other things. It is known to all that the purpose of the development of science is to make things easy for the mankind, not for only a small number of people. Therefore, the first thing to do after a new invention occurs is to spread it so as to benefit as many people as possible. In the course of the spread, the luxury becomes decreasingly luxurious until in the end it becomes a necessity. This is an objective law, nothing can be an exception.

With the quick development of science and technology, the process for many things to become a necessity from a luxury will be greatly shortened. Anything that can be imagined will be invented and in no time becomes a necessity accessible to ordinary people.

From the table, we can see that in the past 10 years, the number of people in a given city who have gone traveling abroad has increased considerably. Especially in the recent 5 years, the figure has been more than tripled, surging from 40,000 to 120,000.
There are several reasons for the change. Firstly, with the development of economy, more and more people become better off. And their ability to finance their trip abroad is growing. Secondly, tourism has greatly developed over the decade. Travel agencies offer not only domestic packages but also travel specials abroad. In addition, individuals today are expected and encouraged to go outside to widen their horizon and to face the real world of globalization. In this way they hope to keep themselves informed of what is going on around the world.
From the changes reflected in the table, we can predict that the number of individuals going out of the country will boost. This encouragingly and inevitably facilitates the cultural exchange between ours and the rest of the world and this trend will be irreversible.

In recent years, more and more citizens here would like to travel abroad. In 1995, the number of people who would like to travel abroad was 10000, which increased to nearly 40000 in 2000. And in 2005, the number further climbed above 12,000. There are several reasons for the shocking rise.

The improvement of the economic conditions is probably the main reason for it. People do not need to worry about their diet and various other necessities. After visiting famous scenic spots throughout our country, the citizens’ taste has changed, with support of enough finance.

Moreover, enhancement of personal capacity is becoming more and more a requirement for those who want to make greater success. With the development of economy and technology, citizens begin to take advantage of different foreign products as well as education. Since most citizens have got used to their life at home, traveling abroad becomes one of the easiest ways to have direct contact with exotic cultures.

Many advantages as traveling abroad may bring to us, it may also bring about many disadvantages. For instance, there are many elites who have ever traveled abroad may be attracted by the nicer living and researching conditions abroad and thus never return, which is really a pity to our nation.

Comparatively speaking, traveling abroad is a serious decision to make. Maybe, look before you leap is better

a letter declining a job offer

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have received the letter from your corporation offering me the opportunity to work as an assistant manager. Thank you very much for your kind offer of this precious opportunity!

However, I have to say sorry for not being able to accept your offer. Shortly after applying for this position in your corporation, I received the admission letter from UCLA and was told this world-famous university would like to accept me as a graduate student in their Business School. After serious consideration, I have finally made the decision to go to the US first for my postgraduate study, which will absolutely promote my future career development .

So I would like to apologize that I have to decline your kind offer, but I believe that after my graduation, if I’m still lucky enough to get such great chance to work for you, I will definitely be a more capable team player in your corporation.

Finally, I love to offer my undying gratitude for all the efforts you have made in processing my application, and your kind understanding is highly appreciated.

Wish you a Happy New Year and wish your corporation even greater success in 2006!

With my best regards,

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am pleased with your offer of the position as a salesman. Thank you very much for your appreciation and kindness.

Unfortunately, I have to say sorry for this opportunity. Several reasons may account for my decision. Firstly, your company is far away from my home, which means that the cost for my traffic is likely to be greater than what I expected. Besides, as an experienced salesman, I wish very much to be a sales manager, to be frank. Last but not least, the company, ABB, shares the opinion above. In other words, it agrees to double my salary, and offers me the position I want.

From what has been discussed above, I cannot help but turn down your offer. Though people in growing numbers are waiting for this, I strongly believe that I am a top one in this field. Sorry! Anyhow, thank you again for your efforts, with best wishes. Obviously, there is little doubt that further attention will be paid to this issue.

Yours,

Norman

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 mins to write a short essay entitled Say No to Pirated Products. You should write at Least 150 words following the outline given below:
Useful words and expressions:
盗版:piracy (n.)
盗版产品:pirated products
知识产权::intellectual property rights
侵犯版权:infringe sb's copyright; copyright infringement
范文:

Nowadays, the problem of piracy has become more and more serious. Books, tapes, VCDs and others high-tech products have been pirated. For instance, when a new product comes onto market, most probably, its pirated counterpart will soon put on its appearance in the market, too.

Piracy has caused a great loss to legitimate producers, inventors and writers in many ways. To start with, the pirated products often cost much less than the genuine ones so that they enjoy a better trading position in spite of their relatively poor quality. The genuine products, on the contrary, sell poorly. What's worse, pirated books sometimes do great harm to the authors' reputation due to some misprints. In the long run, pirated products may have a negative impact on customers. Those legitimate producers' creativity and enthusiasm may be deeply hurt by the fact that some customers are more interested in the pirated products for the sake of small gains.

In my opinion, it's high time that everyone started the battle against piracy. First, customers should develop their consciousness to resist the pirated products. Second, the government should take effective measures to put an end to piracy. Finally, laws must be strictly enforced to completely ban piracy. Only in this way can we wipe the pirated products out of our life.

Dear Editor,
I am writing this letter to reflect some problems I came across recently and. appeal to the improvement of the service industry.
This weekend I bought an English-Chinese dictionary in a bookstore near my home since its cover is elaborately designed. But when I went home and read carefully, I found that the several pages of the dictionary have been cracked and befouled. What is worse, the misprints spread everywhere in the dictionary and seriously affect my comprehension. Since there was such damage and misprint to the dictionary, I went to the bookstore to require for a replace. But to my surprise, the staff of the bookstore turn down my request rudely and even denied the poor quality of the dictionary.
It goes without saying that today’s face-paced and market-oriented economy calls for much higher standard for service industry. However, to my regret, many of the commercials fail to achieve this standard and the quality of the staff needs to be improved. It’s self-evident that the poor quality of practitioners in the service industry will not only deeply disappoint customers but also hamper the development of our country’s economy. As a result, I expect your newspaper to appeal to the service industry to attach more importance to the service improvement.
Thank you for your attention!
Sincerely yours,
Sam

Reduce Waste on Campus

As is known to all, waste on campus has become a more and more serious problem. We can easily see many students dump a lot of food in the garbage can. Some students spend thousands of yuan buying fashionable clothes and so on.
The negative effects of waste can be shown in the following aspects. In the first place, it makes some students dependent on their parents for money, which is harmful to their development. If they don’t learn to support themselves, they will be “useless people” when they graduate. In the second place, it is not easy for our parents to arrange for our schooling. Last but not the least important, there is no denying the fact that our country is still poor. There are many people who cannot go to university and many poor people still need our help.
As far as I am concerned, I should set a good example to reduce waste on campus. First of all, I will refrain from wasting anything, from food to stationery. What’s more, I’m determined to call on more schoolmates to fight against waste. Only through these measures can we hope to reduce waste on campus.

From the table based on a survey we made of the reading preferences of students in an American university in 2002, we learnt that, of all kinds of bookds, contemporary university students like ficitions best, which has 65.9 percent of book circulation in library while other kinds of books have low percentage: general nonfiction --18.2, science/technology/education-10.8,art/literature/poetry--5.1.
It suggests that contemporary students are much more easily influenced by the fashion than ever before. It's a reasonable and good phenomenon because it reveals that university students like to keep up with the development of society. Thus they will easily adapt themselves into the new life after they graduate from school.
Generally, I like reading nonfictions, for it is tightly connected with the reality. To some degree, it's no use reading too much fictions which sometimes will take you into fancy fantasy. Fast life pace also don't allow me to read books on art or poetry. To me, nonfiction is even helpful in analyzing society and humanity

Changes of Ownership of Houses in China
范文:
Ownership of houses in China has changed greatly in the past decade. In the past, most houses were stateowned. But now, private houses are everywhere. As is shown in the chart above, in 1990, the city's houses were mainly state-owned, with a percentage of 75. This percentage became 60 in the year 1995 and then dropped sharply to 20 in 2000. At the same time, the number of private houses has soared up to 80 percent.
There are mainly two reasons that account for this rapid change. Firstly, the government has been forwarding the policy to support private houses programs. These programs have proved to be very important in developing China's economy. Secondly, with the development of economy, people's standard of living has risen. They want to have their own houses to satisfy their needs.
The change has enabled more people to enjoy larger living space. At the same time, people feel pressure to make more money so that they can buy their own houses.

It Pays to Be Honest
范文:
Although honesty is believed to be a virtue, there are still dishonest people in our society. For example, some businessmen sell fake product to their consumers; some students cheat in the exams.
Dishonest people are short-sighted. Those who sell fake products may make money at first, but consumers won’t buy their products any more. As a result, they will lose their fortune or even be sent to prison. By contrast, honest people gain a lot.
Those who always tell truth or keep to their promise not only let others trust them but gain respect from other people as well. Such persons are sure to have a lot of good friends. Because they are trustable and respectable, everyone is eager to make friends with them, Besides, it is easier for a person with a good record to get a good job. Generally speaking, every employer wants his employees to be honest. So we can say that anyone who is honest will be paid back later.
In a word, honesty wins trust, respect and honor. So it is important that we should be honest.

1. 上图所示为某校大学生平均每周使用计算机的时间: 1990年(2 hours)、1995年(4 hours)、2002年(14 hours),请描述其变化;
2. 请说明发生这些变化的原因(可从计算机的用途、价格或社会发展等方面加以说明);
Student Use of Computers
范文:
Students tend to use computers more and more nowadays. Reading this chart, we can find that the average number of hours a student spends on the computer per week has increased sharply. In 1990, it was less than 2 hours; and in 1995, it increased to almost 4 hours; while in 2000, the number soared to 20 hours.
Obviously computers are becoming more and more popular. There are several reasons for this. First, computers facilitate us in more aspects of life. Also, the fast development of the Internet enlarges our demands for using computers. We can easily contact with friends in remote places through the Internet. Besides, the prices of computers are getting lower and lower, which enables more students to purchase them.
Along with the time spent on computers, there arise some problems. The most serious one is that many students are spending so much time playing PC games so that they ignore their studies. It is urgent to let the students use computers in a proper way.

范文:
January 12th, 2002
Dear Mr. President,
I’m very lucky to attend this world-famous university, but I’m afraid I’m not content with the canteen service on campus.
Firstly, the quality of the dishes should be improved. Undoubtedly, there are a lot of delicious dishes, but all the year round, they are the same. More and more students are complaining about eating the same food each day. So I think the most urgent problem is variety.
Secondly, the price is a bit too high. Many of us hope that the canteen can provide us with not only delicious but also cheaper food.
Finally, the environment is so noisy that we can’t enjoy our meals in good mood. I suggest that there be some soft music to help us relax.
These suggestions are not just of my own, but also of may other students. We hope our respectable president will pay attention to our suggestions.
By the way, the canteen workers are very patient and always smiling. So I think if our university offers them better conditions, they will offer us better service.
Best wishes,
Yours sincerely,
Liming

Directions:For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic How to Succeed in a Job Interview? You should write at least 120 words, and base your composition on the outline given in Chinese below:

Nowadays, in an ever tighter job market, great importance has been attached to an interview by both the employer and the applicant. The interview, so to speak, has become indispensable for getting a satisfactory job. On the one hand, the interviewer can take advantage of the occasion to learn about the candidates, such as their work experiences, education and their personalities, so as to pick out the right person for the company. On the other hand, the interviewee can make use of the opportunity to get to know the job he is going to take up, the salary, the working conditions and many other things about the job he is interested in.
Therefore, the job interview is very important to a job-hunter. But how can one succeed in it? Firstly of all, the interviewee must pay attention to his or her appearance. The first impression is always where we start. Get dressed properly and neatly. Secondly, good manners are equally important. Don’t be too proud, and neither too timid. Just be courteous. Thirdly, the interviewee must demonstrate his aptitude and skills for the job and his knowledge about eh job-related areas. Be confident. Last but not the least, the interviewee ought to be honest about his or her personal as well as academic background, for honesty is the best policy.
To sum up, the job interview is indeed important, but there is no need to be nervous. As long as the interviewee has the ability for the job, with careful preparation and a fairly confident and honest performance, his or her success can be ensured.

Directions:For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic Is a Test of Spoken English Necessary? The first sentence has already been written for you. You should write at least 120 words, and base your composition on the outline given in Chinese below:
Is a Test of Spoken English Necessary?
A test of spoken English will be included as an optional component of the College English Test (CET).

范文:
A test of spoken English will be included as an optional (component of the College English Test (CET). Some people contend that it is absolutely necessary to hold a test of spoken English in China because we have been told many times that a Chinese student who has been learning English for years cannot communicate with a native English speaker. Sometimes even those top students who excel at grammar and writing skills find their English inadequate to express their thoughts freely when speaking. A test of spoken English will bring the importance of speaking English to the awareness of the college students, and thus help them with their communicating skills.
On the other hand, there are also people who maintain that good reading and writing skills would be enough for the average English learners. College students are already under considerable pressure from their coursework. Another required test will only add to their burden. Also, some students may take the shortcut and only practice the questions according to the fixed format of the test, which will not actually improve their spoken English.
I believe that a test of spoken English will do more good than harm. Since China will continue its policy of opening and reform, the ability to speak fluent English is a must for anyone who wants to surpass others in a highly competitive society. Whether I take the test or not, I shall make all efforts to practice my spoken English in the rest years in college.

Directions:For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic How I Finance My College Education. You should write at least 100 words, and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:
How I Finance My College Education

范文:
Several years ago new tuition fee policy was put into practice and college students were asked to pay a certain sum of money. And now, all the students, no matter what subjects they are engaged in, must pay for tuition.
There are many ways for a student to finance his college education. Most students ask their parents to pay the tuition fee and pay for their books, accommodation and other cost. A student can also apply for the scholarship. Most universities set up scholarship to offer money to the poor students who do well in entrance exams and reward those who do well in entrance exams and reward those who work well at university. A student can also apply for the low-interest loans. In addition to the above, taking part-time jobs is also a common way for a college student to get money to pay part of his tuition and fees.
So far as I’m concerned, I’d prefer earning the scholarship. This means I must study hard and be a top student, which has always been my goal. After all, the task of a student is to study. And in addition to solving my financial problems, getting the scholarship can also prove my ability and is good for my future.

Some people like to buy books to read. Others like to borrow books from libraries or from other people. Compare the advantages of these two ways of reading. Which do you prefer? Why?

Write a composition of about 150 words on the following topic: Borrowing Books or Buying Books

Some people like to borrow books to read, while others prefer to buy books. Both ways have their advantages.  Borrowing books to read has two major advantages. First, you just urge yourself to finish as soon as possible the books you borrowed from a library or from other people. You will be fined if you fail to return them to the library in due time, or you will lose trust if you keep books of others too long, and they will probably refuse to lend you any more books. So you have to read it desirously, forgetting your meals and sleep. On the other hand, if you buy a book, you may put it away, thinking it is yours and you don’t have to finish it quickly. Another advantage of borrowing books enables you to read books without spending any money. In recent years, more and more books come out each year, and the prices of books keep on rising. Ordinary people cannot afford to buy so many books they want to read either for information or entertainment. In addition, often I need to read only a part of some books. It is unnecessary for me to buy them.

However, there are some kinds of books that I have to buy. The first kind is reference books such as dictionaries and encyclopedias I need to use frequently. The second kind is textbooks I need to read more carefully in order to understand well. And it is also necessary for me to buy some famous literature books like The Complete Short Stories of Mark Twain, The Old Man and the Sea, Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

So I think books are of two kinds: books for borrowing and books for buying. I like to borrow books that I read mainly for entertainment or read a part of. And for those books like reference books, I prefer to buy. Whether to borrow or to buy books, I think, mostly depends on the kinds. All roads lead to Rome.

① You will be fined if you fail to return them to the library in due time.

Fiction Can Teach Us More

Fiction, such as novels and short stories, is always considered as a way of entertainment, but as far as I am concerned, I think it is far more than a pure relaxation. It can be instructive, and it can even teach us more about life than textbooks.

Authors of famous works are usually well experienced. They put all their knowledge and social experience into their literary works. They create a colorful world in which we can find great quantity of treasure.Since fiction is primarily based on everyday life, the knowledge it includes is always close to life. It is easy to master and ready to practice. On the contrary, textbooks focus on specialized subjects and they intend to be obtuse, theoretical or abstract and therefore dull. To most ordinary people, fiction is more acceptable.

There is no royal road to learning. Another reason why fiction is superior to textbooks lies in their imagination. Authors always create attractive characters so as to give his opinion about nature and the society as well as life. It not only provides knowledge, but also teaches us what is the right attitude toward life. For instance, we can learn from Gone With the Wind how to be a strong willed person; from Jack London, how to love life. We can be stimulated to overcome all obstacles to realize our ambitions. So, fiction enables people to form their positive view of life, optimism of spirit and invincible courage. In this aspect, fiction provides us with an opportunity to learn and to practice, while textbooks barely can.

Read Extensively

Reading plays a very important part in human life. Every day we get in touch with reading something. We have a lot of things to read in our lives, such as books, magazines, newspapers, and even advertisement papers distributed everywhere. Through reading we can get a lot of useful information, for example, the latest news of our country and the world.

Nevertheless, people's interests in reading vary considerably. Some people like reading novels. Some people like reading essays. Some other people may prefer reading magazines or newspapers. Here, what I want to emphasize is that no matter what you are interested in, you should read extensively.

I have my reasons for it. First, we are living in a society full of information. We should make ourselves well- informed in order to keep up with the steps of our society. Reading extensively is an efficient method of acquiring information. Second, we need many kinds of skills in our lives. Reading extensively can help us learn those skills so that we can live more comfortably in the world. The more extensively you read, the more skills you can get. Third, we have a lot of decisions to make each day. Sometimes, we may feel difficult to make a correct decision. Reading extensively can help you understand the world you live in, and therefore, help you to make a clever decision in a difficult situation. Fourth, reading extensively can help you enlarge the range of your knowledge so that you can communicate with others more freely. You will find something to say when you talk with your friends no matter what topic you are talking about.

There are some other advantages of reading extensively. Because of the significance of extensive reading, you should begin to do so immediately. If you have determined to read extensively from now on, you are sure to be able to find a lot of books you are interested in, and the time to read them. Your life will become much more meaningful and substantial than before.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic Reading Selectively Or Extensively? You should write at least 100 words, and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:
Reading Selectively Or Extensively

Some people think when we read we should read selectively. That is to say, we should select some books we are interested in and ignore the others. Reading selectively can help us concentrate our limited time and attention on those selected books.
Others think we should read extensively. No matter what kind of book it is, we should look it over. We should read various kinds of books, whether we are interested in them or not. They maintain that reading extensively can help to enlarge our view and grasp the general knowledge in different fields.
In my opinion, the two reading ways have their roles respectively in our reading. However, the disadvantages of each methods are easy to see. If we only read the books we select or prefer, the framework of our knowledge may not be complete. Our knowledge would be rather limited. And if we read without selection, we may not have so much time and energy to be specialized in one particular field. Therefore, the combination of the two methods is more reasonable.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic Don’t Hesitate to Say “No”. You should write at least 100 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:
Don’t Hesitate to Say “No”

范文:
In our daily life, there are many occasions on which we should not hesitate to refuse when asked for help. For one thing, when it is beyond our ability, we should give a direct reply “no”. For another, we the thing we are asked for is unreasonable or even illegal, we should say “no” without hesitation.
However, it is not the case in our real life. Many people prefer to say “yes” when they should say “no”. Some are afraid to lose their face, since they think refusal means their inability. Some people are afraid to offend their acquaintances’ face, such as their friends, relatives and so on.
In fact, doing so is quite harmful. If you agree to do the things beyond your ability, the result will only be worse. The other might as well have asked another person who can help. And if you agree to do the unreasonable or even the illegal favors, such as cheating in the exam, you are in fact not helping the other but hurting him. You yourself will get into trouble too.

Do “Lucky Numbers” Really Bring Good Luck?

范文:
Some people take it for granted that some lucky numbers can bring them good luck. For instance, the so-called lucky number “8” is widely used now because it is sounded like “getting rich” in Chinese and is believed to bring good fortune.
Yet many others don’t think so. They think that numbers have nothing to do with luck. They regard numbers simply as a mathematic symbols for counting. They are anything but a mystery. They laugh at those who think numbers can bring good luck.
I’m in favor of the latter opinion. I think our society is very modern now. We mustn’t count on the so-called lucky numbers to fulfill our wishes. Whether we can have good luck depends on ourselves. If we work hard, good luck will come to us.

Nowadays there are a lot of fake commodities on the market. They range from daily commodities to expensive goods. They have caused many harms in society.
First, fake commodities damage the consumers' interests. In addition, fake commodities affect businessmen and manufacturers, too. Those who have been deceived will be reluctant to consume, which will make business slack. Worst of all, some fake commodities such as medicine, gas cylinder and electric devices will endanger people's lives and social security.
There are many ways to eliminate fake commodities but the following ones may be effective. First, the laws of the protection of consumers should be enforced to severely punish those who produce or sell fake commodities. Second, consumers should be taught how to tell good commodities from fake ones. Third, they should be advised to protect their own interests and not to be led astray by false advertisements.
In a word, the whole society should pay close attention to the problem of fake commodities and launch a campaign against them. Only in this way will fake commodities be possibly eliminated from the market in the future.

Different people have different views on job-hopping. Some people would like to always engage in one work because they think that if one sticks to one work, he will be quite familiar and skillful with the work. However, others would like to change jobs constatly because they consider it fashionable to do so and besides they think they can get different work experiences.
As to me, I am in favor of the former group of people's attitude. I think hthat if one always works in one field, he can accumulate a lot of experience in that field which in turn will further improve his work. Therefore he will become an expert in that field. However, if one hops from one job to another, he can never amass experience in one field. Although he can get different work experiences, he can't make use of these experiences.in one particular work. Therefore, he will always be a jack-of-all-trades.
In conclusion, if one wants to be an expert in one field, he should not hop from one job to another

This proverb can be verified by many other proverbs"There is no royal road in learning", "Rome was not built in a day". Anyway it means that one should not be overanxious for quick results, otherwise he will fail. If one wants to be a scholar, he should make persistent efforts, burying himself in books. If he wants to take sa shortcut, he will never become a scholar. If one wants to be president of a country, he should first display his remarkable ability in his routine work so that his ability will be recognized and accepted by others. However, if he is impatient for success, he will never realize his goal. If a man courts a woman, he should try to win her love gradually. He should not expect to win her heart within a day, otherwise he will never get true love.
In conclusion, one should follow in order and advance step by step and should not be impatient for success, otherwise he will suffer a setback.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic Health Gains in Developing Countries. You must base your composition on the following instructions (given in Chinese):
In the developing countries great changes took place in life expectancy and infant mortality in the period from 1960 to 1990. In 1960 life expectancy was very low, while infant mortality ws very high. However, in 1990 life expectancy increased, whereas infant mortality declined.
There are many reasons for the changes, but in general, they come down to three major ones. First, their living conditions were improved. In the old days people in the developing countries suffered hunger and were exposed to the elements. Nowadays they are well fed and housed. Naturally they live longer than before. Besides, the medical condition was also improved and so the adequate medical treatment ensures the adults' health and reduces infant mortality. Most important of all, in the early 60s there were constant wars in some developing countries because of the colonial rule and so a lot of people were killed in wars. Nowadays most developing countries have become independent countries and their people live a peaceful life.
In conclusion, the national independence and social stability are responsible for these changes.

As to me, I am in favor of the first idea. The reasons are as follows. First, addmittedly, letting off firecrackers will create an auspicious atmosphere, but it will not really bring luck to let off firecrackers. Besides, it is dangerous to let off firecrackers. It was reported that letting off firecrackers causes a lot of accidents, fire, injury, and even death every year.
However,it is our traditional custom to celebrate an important occasion by letting off firecrackers. How can we let off firecrackers whithoug causing accidents? The possible solution is that the substitute for the firecracker should be invented so that we can celebrate an important occasion whitout causing accidents.

Nowadays ther are a lot of false advertisements in society. They have caused many harms to society. Generally, their harms can be listed as follows.
First, they exaggerate the functions of the goods they advertise and mislead consumers. Second , some advertisements contain obscene contents and bring about spiritual pollution. Third, they seriously damage the credit of businesses because the shops which sell those goods will be distrusted and even considered the conspirators of those advertisers by consumers.
Personally, I am usually vigilant against any advertisements and so I have never been taken in. However, some people are credulous and are easily taken in. Therefore, in my opinion, effective measures must be taken to ban false advertisements and protect consumers' interests. First, all the advertisements must be strictly censored by the authorities concerned before they are published. Besides, severe punishment must be inflicted on those who publish illegal advertisements.
In conclusion, false advertisements must be eliminated in our society.

范文:
In China young people usually want to be engineers, doctors, businessmen, etc. and few want to be teachers. Unlike most young people I decide to be a teacher. There are many reasons for my personal preference but generally they come down to three major ones.
First, I was born in a teacher's family and so I was greatly influenced by my father. Second, I find that education is important because it is the basis of science and technology and if a country's education is backward, its science and technology will never be advanced. Third, teachers are needed in our country, especially in the countryside.
However, it is not easy to be a qualified teacher. A qualified teacher must have a good command of his specialty. Besides, he should be responsible and devoted to the educational cause. Most important of all, he should be patriotic. To be a qualified teacher in the future I must lose no time to acquire as much knowledge as possible. 范文:
Different people have different views on opportunity. It is held that there are few opportunities. But it is also held that there re opportunities everywhere.
Those who hold the first opinion think that there are too many people and so there is always an intense competition for limited opportunities. In contrast, those who hold the second view think that if one is not prepared, he can hardly have any opportunities; however, if one is prepared, he can have a lot of opportunities.
As to me, I agtee with the latter opinion. Admittedly, there is really an intense competition for limited opportunities, but this is not to say that one can't create opportunities himself. In most cases opportunities are created by people themselves. For example, many people lost their jobs in recent years. Some people wait for opportunities in vain. However, others create opportunities themselves and get self-employed. Eventually they become employers themselves.
Therefore, to some extent, one can take his destiny into his own hands.

Motorcycles and City Traffic

范文:
Nowadays, motorcycles are popular around us. They have be come an important means of transport in Chinese cities. Compared with the bike and the car, the motorcycle has its own advantages.
First, it is quite flexible. When there is a traffic jam, it can go through the cars that are held up in the street. Besides, it doesn't consume much petrol. Most important of all, it can carry another person at the back.
But every coin has two sides. The negative aspects are also apparent. To begin with, it's very complicated to get qualified for riding a motorcycle. You'll have to go through a series of procedures to get a riding license. Furthermore, the maintenance is expensive. Worst of all, it costs a big sum of money to pay for the license plate, especially in Shanghai.
In conclusion, it has both favorable and unfavorable aspects. However, if the authorities concerned simplify the procedures and reduce the cost of the license plate, the motorcycle will be accepted by more people

范文:
The new century is approaching. It can be expected that there will be a breakthrough in life sceience and space science in the 21st century.
First, scientists will conquer incurable diseases through the transformation of genes. With the same technology they can breed new species of animals and even human life in the laboratory. Most important of all, they can decelerate aging and prolong life.
Besides, permanent stations will be set up in the moon or other planets or stars so that scientists can make a thorough study of the moon and other planets or star. Most probably life will be found in other stars in universe or the planets or stars suitable for the human existence will be discovered.
However, the scientific development will also bring about some social problems. How should we regard from an ethical perspective the one who is bred through the gene technology in the laboratory. How can the police identify the criminal from a group of people with the same DNA?
It is quite natural that we will meet problems in the scientific and social development. Therefore, we should be prepared to meet new challenges.

Your composition should be no less than 120 words and you should quote as few figures as possible.

范文:
The graph shows the changing rate of car accidents in Walton city in 1990. The first two months of 1990 showed an increasing trend. The rate rose to 32 in March but fell to 26 in June. From June on the rate was rising again and reached the peak point 39 in August. After August the rate began to decline, and eventually dropped to the lowest point 16 at the end of the year.
The highest rate in August was due to unfavorable weather conditions. Humidity and high temperature make drivers impatient, which easily leads to car accidents. The high rate in the first half of 1990 was also caused by the bad weather condition. In Walton City the excessive rain comes at early spring. The rain made road slippery, which often resulted in car accidents.
This year the pattern is expected to change. The city government has raised fund to improve the road condition. Two new roads will be finised at the beginning of this year and are expected to open to traffic soon. Furthermore, the new road regulation provides that in summer every car must be air-conditioned. With all these precautions, I'm sure that the rate of car accidents will be much lower this year.

范文:
Nowadays humanity is faced with a lot of troublesome problems: energy crisis, cancer, pollution, population explosion, tec. They are threatening the survival of humanity. Therefore, some people are pessimistic about the future of humanity.
They are pessimistic because they think that limited energy on earth will be exhausted soon; incurable diseases are threatening more people's lives; pollution is worsening the environment; population explosion will make food shortage even more serious.
Actually they needn't worry too much about these problems. Scientists will have developed new energy resources by the time oil and coal are used up. Besides, scientists are making a thorough study of genes and they will manage to cure cancer by adjusting the arrangement of genes. They are also making efforts to control pollution and population. Furthermore, all the governments in the world are concerned about these problems and they ahve taken measures to solve these problems.
Therefore, we have every reason to be sure that human beings will conquer nature but they will never be conquered.

How to Solve the Housing Problem in Big Cities

范文:
The shortage of housing is one of the most serious problems facing many big citeis in China. Though the government has spent a large sum of money on housing, the investment has produced little financial return and a housing shortage still persists. Two generations sharing one room and newly-married couples finding it difficult to have a house of their own are still common cases. Housing shortage is a problem that requires and urgent solution.
People's attitudes towards the solution to the housing problem are different. Some suggest to build more high-rise apartments; others believe to develop underground housing areas. I am in favour of the former opinion. For one thing, it is cheaper to build above gound than below. For another, living underground for a long time will do harm to people's health. Above all, people are unwilling to live unerground with artificial lighting and they prefer to live above ground to enjoy the sunshine.
Although there may be some other ways to solve the housing shortage problem, I believe to build more high-rise apartments is one of the promising solutions to the housing problem.

How to Solve the Problem of Heavy Traffic

范文:
The urban traffic is getting increasingly crowded nowadays in China. The roads are pakced with cars, bicylces and pedestrians and traffic jams, bus delays and traffic accidents are a common scene.
Then how to solve this problem? Some suggest to lay down more roads to make the traffic less crowded and speed up the flow of traffic. Others believe that we should open up more public bus routes, so that more people will take the public buses instead of travelling by cars and bicycles.
Though above two views sound reasonable, they have their own drawbacks. The fomer may take up much land which could be used for farms and houses. The latter may cause inconvenience for those who are used to travelling by car or bicycles. I think the best answer to the traffic problem is a combination of the two. More roads can be built to hold more traffic and meanwhile more public bus routes can be opened up to those who prefer to use the public transportation.

With the rapid development of society, it is essential for college students to get to know the world outside the campus. There are a variety of reasons why we should do that. The primary one is that we can expand our horizons. Nowadays, as students, our knowledge is mostly derived from books, which is really limited. Only through contact with society will we learn more practical things. Second, it will enable us to be more sophisticated after graduation. Finally, knowing the world outside the campus may awaken in us a high sense of duty and help us make greater achievements in the future.
As is known to all, there are many ways we can know the society, such as through community service or keeping informed through TV, radio or newspapers.
As a university student, I will read newspapers and magazines to enrich my knowledge and do some volunteer work for the community or take up a part-time job in my spare time so that I can learn from my experience and prepare for my future work.

Practice Makes Perfect

范文:
The famous saying “Practice makes perfect” is widely accepted today. It means if we practice unfamiliar things again and again, we’ll be able to perform it perfectly.
The practice of learning English is a good example. We are not living in an English speaking country. So, in order to learn it well, we need extra practice, such as reading English books, going to English corners, or communicating with foreigners. Only sitting at the desk cannot lead to the mastery of English.
As another example, if we want to be skilled in using the computer, we also need to practice using it. Some children become little experts in computer, just because they play with it everyday. On the contrary, if we just stick to books, we will still feel confused when using computers. Judging from the evidence offered, we might safely draw the conclusion that practice makes perfect.

范文:
Many people believe that the world’s supply of fresh water will never be used up. They think that fresh water comes from such a variety of sources that it is always sufficient for use. Such an opinion leads to a shocking waste of water.
As a matter of fact, the earth is short of fresh water. Furthermore, with the rapid growth of the world’s population, the rising demand for water by industry, and the serious pollution of our surroundings, the world is facing the danger of running out of fresh water. Actually, in some big cities, fresh water cannot meet the daily needs.
Therefore, to find new ways to save water is an urgent task. First, we should pass strict laws to control any waste of water. Second, scientists must work even harder to purify sea water and polluted water, and try to find substitutes to reduce the use of fresh water.

The two-day weekend has brought a lot of benefits to college students. It not only offers us more time to get rid of tiredness and have a good rest, but also gives us more chances to take up some hobbies, such as fishing, reading, or gardening. From these activities we can learn many things outside the classroom, which will add to our knowledge.
Despite the convenience it brings us, the two-day weekend has also given rise to quite a few problems. The most serious one is that the weekdays are filled with more lesson, sometimes too many. Because our classes are limited to Monday through Friday, we have to take more lessons each day than in the past. This leaves us little time to catch our breath during the weekdays.
In order to benefit most from the two-day weekend, I have decided to make a good plan for the two-day weekend. Of course I should take this chance to relax. But during the weekend, I will still set aside enough time to study. By doing so ii can have a good time as well as make progress in my studies.

And it will be better if he emphasizes that this is the very job he wants and he3 won’t cast an eye on any other jobs. The interviewer will most probably be moved.

2. 也有人认为金钱是万恶之源 (root of all evil)

范文:
Can money buy happiness? Various people have various answers. Some people think that money is the source of happiness. With money, one can buy whatever he enjoys. With money, one can do whatever he likes. So, in their minds, money can bring comfort, security, and so on. Money, as they think, is the source of happiness.
But there are still a lot of others who think that money is the root of all evil. Money drives people to steal, to rob, and to break the law. A lot of people became criminals just because they were in search of money. And in the Western countries, there is nothing that can’t be bought by money. Many people lose their own lives when hunting it.
I think that money is essential to life and we cannot do without money. But even though money is necessary to life, it can’t buy happiness. Happiness is not something that can be measured by money. It is a state of mind. One can have plenty of money, with which he can buy whatever he wants, and at the same time he is not happy because he is never satisfied or he is troubled by various kinds of problems. Therefore, although money is necessary for a happy life, it can’t buy happiness.

3.结论。

范文:
Most of us have had an experience which reminds us the world is getting smaller. Perhaps when you went to some place far away from the city you live in and thought you knew nobody there, you were surprised to find that you ran into one of your old classmates on the street! Then both of you cried out, “What a small world!”
Why is the world getting smaller and smaller? For one thing, modern technology has created various means of transportation. And they are more and more available. Buses, trains, planes and taxis are found in most cities of the world. They carry goods and passengers to and from every corner of the world. For another thing, with the development of modern society, people are in contact with one another more frequently. Everyday we must deal with a lot of people unknown to us before. The more advanced a society, the more contacts we make with others.
So we can draw the conclusion that as long as technology makes progress, the world will grow smaller and smaller.

The News Report contains a large amount of information – from the international political situation to the latest foot-ball game. And the most important character is its fast pace. Because of this fast pace, news programs can contain much information in a short time.
In my opinion, the News Report is more than a TV program. It is a way of communication. From this program, people can know and understand world affairs. The world thus becomes smaller and smaller. I especially appreciate this benefit of watching the news.

How I Overcame my Difficulties in Learning English

范文:
To a Chinese, the task of learning English well is not easy. So I, like many other English learners, have met with difficulties in learning English during the past seven years. But I managed to overcome them and made much progress.
The spelling and meaning of words can be said to be the first difficulty I met as a beginner. But I found our my own way to deal with them. As to spelling, I never copied a new work again and again to remember it, but tried to find its relevance to the sound. In fact, as long as I can read the word out, I can write it out. As to the meaning, I rarely recite its Chinese translation but often put the word into the sentence to learn its meaning. Moreover, if you use a word quite often, its spelling and meaning will be no problem. After all, we are learning English in order to use it.
Grammar and idioms may be another difficulty. But I have also got over it. I have not read lots of grammar books. But I spent much time reading the articles written by native speakers or specialists in English. By doing so, I came to gain “a sense of English language”. I began to gain a feel for which sentences are “good English” and which are not.
Finally, I want to say that overcoming all these difficulties requires perseverance. In the past seven years I spent at least an hour on English each day. I believe this is an important reason why I am able to make progress in learning English.

You should write your composition in three paragraphs. Remember to write your composition in readable handwriting on the right side of this sheet.

Is Failure a Bad Thing?

范文:
Failure is a common thing in our daily life. As students, we sometimes fail to get high scores in our examinations. When we play games, we might be beaten by others. And there are times when we fail to do satisfactory work. All these failures happen naturally and almost every one of us has such experiences.
However, there are different attitudes towards failure. Some people lose heart when they fail; they think the world is at its end. Some people don’t take failure seriously but just let it be, while some others learn much from failure, and therefore see the light of hope through failure.
In my opinion, what really counts is not failure itself, but what we think of failure and what we do after failure. As long as we don’t give up, keeping believing in ourselves, and in the meantime learn something from failure, we’ll certainly make our mark in the end. So I am never afraid of failure, for I believe that failure is not a bad thing. Rather, “Failure is the mother of success.”

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition of no less than 100 words on Changes in People's Diet. Study the following table carefully and your composition must be based on the information given in the table. Write three paragraphs to:
1, state the changes in people's diet (饮食) in the past five years;
2, give possible reasons for the changes
3, draw your own conclusions.
4, you should quote as few figures as possible.

范文:
From the chart we can see that during the past five years there have been great changes in people’s diet. The greatest change occurs in grain consumption, which has dropped 4% from 49% in 1986 to 45% in 1990 in total food consumption. The second greatest change is in milk consumption, which increased from 10% in 1986 to 13% in 1990. But on the other hand, two trends can be observed in the consumption of meat and fruit and vegetables. From 1986 to 1989, meat consumption increased from 17% to 23% while that of fruit and vegetables dropped from 24% to 20%. From 1989 to 1990, meat consumption dropped a little to 21%, while that of fruit and vegetables increased a little to 21%.
What has caused the great changes in people’s diet? The main reason, I think, lies in the improvement in people’s income level. With the development of our society, people are becoming richer and richer, which enables them to purchase more nutritious food such as meat and milk. In the meantime, grain consumption in people’s diet consequently dropped.
So from the analysis, we can draw a conclusion that our society is progressing and people are living a better life than ever before. We are now able to purchase more delicious and nutritious food, resulting in an improvement in our health.

Bicycle – An Important Means of Transport in China
The bicycle is the most common means of transport in our country. There are several reasons for that. First, most people are not rich enough to buy a car. Since the bicycle is not expensive, it is affordable by the average Chinese families. Second, China has a large population and the traffic is heavy. The bicycle has the advantage of being small in size. A road which can only allow two cars to pass may allow more than ten bicycles to run side by side. Finally, people enjoy riding a bicycle to school, to work and on outing. It is so pleasant and the exercise is good for people’s health.
Compared with a car, a bicycle has its disadvantages and advantages. For instance, a bicycle is not fit for a long distance trip. A person who sits all day long in a car might get fat and unhealthy, while a person on a bicycle may gain good health and pleasure.
The bicycle is popular in China and it will remain so for a long time to come. Many things must change before cars became common in China. Therefore, in the foreseeable future, the bicycle will still be welcome.

Recent efforts toward the greening of our cities have achieved much, although the results are still far from satisfactory. In recent years many trees have been planted in the cities and much care has been taken of the planted trees. In spite of all this, the greening process is relatively slow compared with cities in many other countries. For example, the green space available on average to each Shanghai citizen is only 0.4 Mu while every Londoner has more than 20 Mu.
We can benefit much from making our cities greener by planting trees. First, trees absorb carbon dioxide to produce oxygen which is essential to the health of human beings. Second, trees and other greenery make our cities more beautiful. Third, trees can also improve the climate of the cities.
Since we can get so much from making our cities greener, we should spare no effort to do that. We should plant more trees and take better care of them. We also should not cut down the trees. In a word, we should do everything to add to the greening of our cities.

Ever since early this century, electricity has become an essential part of our modern life. It plays an important role in many fields such as industry, agriculture and the daily life of men. Electricity is a source of energy that makes it possible for the factories to turn out products and for people to create comfortable living conditions, for example.
If there were no electric power, things would be quite different. Machines could not run and people would have to fall back on their hands to produce what is essential for them to keep alive. Traffic would have to stop at night because there would be no lights in the street. A world in darkness would no longer be a pleasant one. In a word, things would be in a mess.
Therefore, we should realize the importance of electricity. As electricity is insufficient in our country, we should be frugal in using electricity. We should make great efforts to produce more electricity

The tape recorder is one of the most welcome and popular electronic devices ever invented. Nowadays, almost every family has a tape recorder. It can record people’s voices or popular songs or some other things that people would like to listen to more than once. Tape recorders have been warmly welcomed since the day they were invented.
This device is useful in many ways. For example, a reporter can use it in interviews instead of the old, less accurate means of writing them in a notebook. Also, in studying foreign languages, students can use it to improve their listening ability. Moreover, they can record their own voice to improve their pronunciation in the foreign language.
However, it can also become a nuisance. Your hearing can be seriously harmed if you listen to a recorder with the volume too high. And, if you can’t control yourself, you can waste a lot of time listening to a recorder. So, if used properly, the recorder will serve you well. If used improperly, it can do harm to you.

Advertising is common throughout the world as a way of letting the public know about a product. Some people feel that advertising is generally helpful, while others feel it is often harmful. Discuss your idea of good and bad effects of advertising, and decide whether you think it is generally helpful or harmful. Use specific examples to support your discussion.

Write a composition of about 150 words on the following topic:

The Good and Bad Effects of Advertising

You are to write in four paragraphs. In the first paragraph, state your point of view. In the second paragraph, describe the harmful effects and give specific examples. In the third paragraph, describe the helpful effects and give specific examples. In the last paragraph, restate your point of view. Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriacy. Failure to follow the instructions may result in a loss of marks.

The Good and Bad Effects of Advertising

In most countries in the world, advertising is common. You can see posters on doors, signs on buses, pictures in magazines, and commercials on TV. Though these signs of advertising are often disliked, I feel that, overall, advertising has very positive results. he harmful effects of advertising are obvious. When you are listening to beautiful music on the radio, a commercial is disturbing when it interrupts your program and changes your mood. Television commercials are the worst of all. Your program is stopped, and you are forced to watch an advertisement unless you actively change the channel or leave the room. I think that there should be laws to limit the advertisers’ right to interrupt TV and radio programs.

In general, however, I think that the positive results of advertisements are beneficial to society and individuals. When I do shopping, I can use advertisements in newspapers to compare prices, features, and quality of the product I want to buy. By being more informed, I can buy something that will benefit me in the long run. With advertisements, people save a lot of time in shopping, looking for jobs, etc. Adversity leads to prosperity.

All in all, for a wise and educated shopper, the helpful effects of advertising outweigh the harmful effects.

My View on Advertisements on TVNowadays advertisements are very common. Whenever you turn on TV, you are likely to see ads. The advertisers are trying to inform you of the many different sorts of up-to-date products on the market. Besides, it often occurs while you are absorbed in watching a wonderful film on TV, endless commercials interrupt you from time to time, and make you quite annoyed.

There are two reasons, I think, for the growing number of ads on TV. First, in a competitive economy, the consumer usually has the choice of several different brands of the same product. Thus, manufacturers are confronted with a problem—how to keep their sales high enough to stay competent in the business. They solve this problem by advertising. By advertising, each producer tries to convince the consumers that its product is preferable. Second, most consumers are interested in ads. They want to get from TV ads the firsthand information about new products, which enables them to choose the one they like best. Consequently, ads increase a lot on the TV screen.

As far as I am concerned, I am in favor of TV ads because most of them are interesting and informative. But there is no denying that some TV ads are tedious and boring. So I feel TV stations are faced with an arduous task to strengthen the control of ads, to improve their quality and to make them attractive.

Fast Food

Fast food is becoming more popular in China, especially among children and teenagers. Today, it's certainly difficult to think of any other single thing that represents the fast pace of modern society as powerfully as fast food.
There are several reasons for its popularity. First, it is very convenient and saves a lot of time. The trends of modern society seem to all point to one ultimate goal —— saving time, and fast food well serves this purpose. You just go into a fast food restaurant, order your food, and your food is ready in no time. You can either eat it there or take it away. Second, its popularity is also attributed to the clean and comfortable environment of fast food restaurants, the excellent service, and the guaranteed quality of food.
However, in terms of nutrition, fast food is far from satisfactory. It usually does not compose a balanced diet and is low in nutritional value. Thus, doctors suggest that people, especially children, eat fast food as little as possible. Although cooking at home is time-consuming and the following washing-up tiresome, it offers healthy and delicious meals your body likes and needs. Fast food is only a good choicewhen you are in a hurry and turn to it once in a while.

A. Cars play an important role in modern society. But they are also responsible for a good part of air pollution in big cities. Write an essay of about 200 words on car and air pollution on the following topic: Cars and Air Pollution
B. Your essay must be written neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2.

Outline:
1. the serious problem of air pollution caused by cars;
2. your suggestions on how to deal with the problem.

Cars and Air Pollution

Too many cars have created a lot of serious problems in our world. Besides congestion, accidents and fast fuel consumption, cars are responsible for a good part of air pollution in big cities. All the time, they are pumping huge amounts of waste gases into the atmosphere. These gases are very harmful, causing disease and even death. Last winter, car fumes formed heavy smog over Beijing, making the sky gloomy for weeks and deteriorating people's health.
One possible solution is to design and develop clean cars and clean fuels. In Tsinghua University, campus buses are driven by electricity. In Beijing some of the public buses begin to run on natural gas, which does not give off as much carbon dioxide as the petrol. But it may take decades for the new models of clean cars to completely replace the traditional ones.
Another solution is to develop modern public transportation systems and restrict the use of private cars. If the price of petrol rises constantly and the public vehicles are efficient and convenient enough, most people will not private cars. And the total number of cars in big cities will reduce greatly.
On the whole, the elimination of air pollution needs the co-efforts from the government, the public and the environments. This problem will be solved only with the help of science and technology. (227 words)

OUTLINE:
1. Two secondary school teachers I remember
2. The differences between the two teachers in classroom attitudes
3. Their attitudes to their students
4. Their methods of teaching

A Matter of Approach

Two secondaryschool teachers I remember show how different people can be though engaged in the same profession.
Mrs. Wang, my philosophy teacher, sent us to sleep less than ten minutes when she started talking in class. When a head nodded, she would point at the dozing student and made threatening remarks. She said that she was bored teaching us. Some students in her eyes had no desire to learn. But the other teacher Mr. Li always had bright eyes in a smiling face and encouraging words which showed that he loved Chinese history he was teaching and wanted us to love it too.
When it came to their attitudes to their students, they were different too. After Mrs. Wang finished her day's lessons she felt that she had finished her job. Once when I asked her a question outside class about a term, she continued with preparation to leave and said that I could bring my question to class next week. Before I knew it she had put her keys into her handbag and walked out of the door. In the history class, however, a question even after the bell would still be given attention to by Mr. Li. He would rush to the board in a last minute attempt to clear up. Often he was seen with a number of students standing outside the classroom, discussing the day's assignment.

Their methods of teaching were not like as well. Mrs. Wang stuck to the textbook and trained us how to memorize minute facts. However Mr. Li brought in films, maps, slides, tapes, anything that would help us learn. Once the whole class went to see the 'film Lin Zexu' in order to better understand the history of the Optium War from 1840 to 1842. Owing to these contrasts, I do not think I can forget either of my past teachers.

Dear Sir:
I have been following with great interest the discussion inspired by Mr. Wang Li's article "Why Do We Need English?" published in the Local English Daily of 20th May, 1999.
The one aspect of the English language that most of your correspondents seem to be unaware of is its widespread use as the international language of diplomacy, commerce and technology. It is the language of the United Nations and its agencies as well as of many other international bodies. We would be foolish to confine our vision to our national borders only. We are still, after all, dependent on other countries for technical and industrial assistance. How can we hope to be economically and technologically independent if we are not able to communicate in these areas outside our own country?
English must be taught in all our schools, not only for the above reasons but also so that our students can go abroad to learn the techniques our nation so urgently needs. We also need representatives who can command respect at the international conference tables of the world. And if English is the common language of communications for world diplomacy, economics and defence, then let us be as fluent and proficient in it as possible, for the sake of our own country's advancement and prestige.

Should the pirate Software and Movies be Banned?

The pirated software means a great loss to the developers of the original software as the former erodes market shares of their original counterpart. Similarly, when the pirated movies attract more viewers, movie companies find their audience decreasing and accordingly their income down.
The other side of the coin is that the pirated software and movies promise their consumers a number of benefits. For one thing, they are much cheaper than the original. For another allow their customers cheaper access to more tools and entertainment. They are poplar because they seem to cater better for the interest of their customers.
Despite these seeming benefits, the pirated software and movies should be banned, because by nature they represent unfair competition in our economic life. encouraged or left out of control, they would upset normal competition and eventually lead to the breakdown of economic order. Software developers would cease to offer products of quality and movie companies would refuse to produce good movies. If all this happened, ultimately customers would have to suffer. Therefore, we’d better stop the pirated software and movies

The tourist trade is booming. With all this coming and going, you’d expect greater understanding to develop between the nations of the world. Not a bit of it! Superb systems of communication by air, sea and land make it possible for us to visit each other’s countries at a moderate cost. What was once the ‘grand tour’, reserved for only the very rich, is now within everybody’s grasp. The package tour and chartered flights are not to be sneered at. Modern travelers enjoy a level of comfort which the lords and ladies on grand tours in the old days couldn’t have dreamed of. But what’s the sense of this mass exchange of populations if the nations of the world remain basically ignorant of each other?

Many tourist organizations are directly responsible for this state of affairs. They deliberately set out to protect their clients from too much contact with the local population. The modern tourist leads cosseted, sheltered life. He lives at international hotels, where he eats his international food and sips his international drink while he gazes at the natives from a distance. Conducted tours to places of interest are carefully censored. The tourist is allowed to see only what the organizers want him to see and no more. A strict schedule makes it impossible for the tourist to wander off on his own; and anyway, language is always a barrier, so he is only too happy to be protected in this way. At its very worst, this leads to a new and hideous kind of colonization. The summer quarters of the inhabitants of the cite universities: are temporarily re-established on the island of Corfu. Blackpoll is recreated at Torremolinos where the traveler goes not to eat paella, but fish and chips.

The sad thing about this situation is that it leads to the persistence of national stereotypes. We don’t see the people of other nations as they really are, but as we have been brought up to believe they are. You can test this for yourself. Take five nationalities, say, French, German, English, American and Italian. Now in your mind, match them with these five adjectives: musical, amorous, cold, pedantic, native. Far from providing us with any insight into the national characteristics of the peoples just mentioned, these adjectives actually act as barriers. So when you set out on your travels, the only characteristics you notice are those which confirm your preconceptions. You come away with the highly unoriginal and inaccurate impression that, say, ‘Anglo-saxons are hypocrites’ or that ‘Latin peoples shout a lot’. You only have to make a few foreign friends to understand how absurd and harmful national stereotypes are. But how can you make foreign friends when the tourist trade does its best to prevent you?

Carried to an extreme, stereotypes can be positively dangerous. Wild generalizations stir up racial hatred and blind u to the basic fact—how trite it sounds! –that all people are human. We are all similar to each other and at the same time all unique

There are many advantages for a student to have a part time job. For instance, it helps him to realize that no success comes from nothing.

It enables him to be independent and builds up his self-confidence. Therefore, part-time jobs can get the students out of the ivory tower and give them the opportunity to know more of himself and of his personal value in society.

As everything has two sides, the disadvantages can't be ignored. Part-time jobs cut into students' study time; some even become so preoccupied with making money that they ca ‘t focus their attention on studying. In the end, the students may fall behind or fail in their studies.

In my opinion, students can choose to take up a job according to their own situation. The most important thing is for him to keep a good balance, put his study on top of the list and assign an adequate amount of time to it.

According to the above chart, the number of the people who go on the internet has increased from 620 thousand in 1997 to 58 million in 2002. this indicates that internet has gained its popularity in China at a very high speed.

There are many reasons for Internet’s rapid development in China. First, as a convenient source of information as well as efficient means of communication, Internet becomes more and more useful to our study and work. Second, due to fierce competition computer companies have lowered the price of their products. The cheaper computers become, the more users there are. With computer, they can easily have access to the Internet. In addition, with the development of our society and the improvement of our living standard, people in China pursue a more colorful life with Internet, some even often do some shopping through the Internet.

Internet is also a sword with two edges. It brings about troubles for us. One common problem is computer viruses. They spread very quickly through the Internet and cause great damage to computer users. Another is crime committed through the Internet. As a result, we feel happy about the rapid development of internet in China but at the same time we should guard against its negative effects.

Only through these measures can we hope to reduce waste on campus

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Cell Phone

Nowadays, with the rapid development of IT and information industry, cell phones play a dominant role in towns people's life. But, like everything else, they have both favorable and mffavorahle aspects.First, it's useful. As a wireless mobile telephone, it's easy and handy to early to wherever one goes and call the callee however far away he is. Therefore, it greatly facilitates people's life. Second, it's convenient. Whenever one meets trouble or something urgent, one can nmke a call immediately. Most important of all, it's a very helpful companion. With a multirfunction cell phone in hand, one can easily get on the Net, browsing the useful information, conducting e-commerce and doing whatever one can do via Internet.

However, just as everything has two sides, the cell phone also has many disadvantages. To begin with, it's expensive to buy and costly to pay the hills, esp. that of global service. To make matters worse, it's also easy to lose and costly to get it repaired. Worst of all,it's not as clear as a family telephone and sometimes the number dialed is often not available. Last but not least, it's alleged the microwaves in it might do harm to people's health. In my opinion, with its expenses greatly reduced after China's entry into the WTO, it will face an ever brighter future in its development. Someday most of them will be developed into new Intemet-enabled mobile phones, which will be as useful as pocket computers. And I believe its advantages will not only offset its disadvantages, but also far outweigh them.

For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Can Money Buy Happiness?

Can Money Buy Happiness?
And in the Western countries, there is nothing that can't be bought by money. Many people lose their own lives when hunting it.
I think that money is essential to life and we cannot do without money. But even though money is necessary to life, it can't buy happiness. Happiness is not something that can be measured by money. It is a state of mind. One can have plenty of money, with which he can buy whatever he wants, and at the same time he is not happy because he is never satisfied or he is troubled by various kinds of problems. Therefore, although money is necessary for a happy life, it can't buy happiness.

My Hobby

My hobby is fishing. I am fond of going fishing, for it is both interesting and instructive-It tempers my willpower. Last Sunday I went fishing with my friend, He Ping. We started at daybreak. After three hours' cycling, we arrived at the outskirts of Hefei and came to a stream. The water is clear and clean. One can see fish swimming. The meadow sprinkled with buttercups slopes to the stream. It is a good place for fishing.
In a few minutes everything was ready. Putting the bait of earthworms on the hook, dropping the hue into the strum, we sat there fishing with rod in hand. An hour passed. I did not catch a single fish. I lifted the fishing rod time and again. Time and again I was disappointed. There was no fish on the hook. On the other side of the stream, He Ping had caught several fish, one of which was very big.
"How comes it that you catch fish casily while it is so difficult for me?" I asked.
"it's easy. Only you need Io be patient." He Ping answered. "Make sure that you lift the fishing rod when the whole flat has sunk. I'm sure a fish will greet you on the hook."
After a while the floats were swinging. I kept my breath and waked. The floats became still again. "Come on my hook, dear fish." I was saying to myself. In a moment the floats swang again and then sank abruptly, Just at that moment I lifted my fishing rod. To my delight I caught a fish. Grlnning, I took it off the hook.
This gave me a great revelation(启示):Stamina(毅力) is what we need to achieve success. And it is more important to young people who usually lack it.

Financial crisis

The threat of impending financial disaster concentrates political minds wonderfully. On Thursday a group of Congressional leaders heard Hank Paulson, the Treasury secretary, and Ben Bernanke, the Federal Reserve chairman, paint a dire economic scenario if they did not approve a more sweeping remedy for the financial crisis. Student and car loans, not just mortgages, would all be harder to get. The economy would sink into a severe recession.

For this reason, ad hoc responses will still be critical, such last week’s federal guarantees for money-market funds, Fed loans to banks to purchase asset-backed commercial paper and, on Sunday, approval of the remaining two big independent investment banks, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs, to become Fed-regulated bank holding companies whose investment bank units can now borrow from the Fed on the same terms as other banks.

It could be some time before the Treasury is able to purchase mortgages en masse, and longer still before that starts to affect the broader financial system and economy. In the meantime, the crisis could claim other victims.

The financial crisis

A break in the clouds

But questions abound over a $700 billion rescue plan for Wall Street

Mr Paulson’s plan is stunning in its brevity (two-and-a-half pages) and audacity.

It is the duty of every man to work. The life of a lazy man is of no use to himself and to others. The man who is too lazy to work is the man who's generally most ready to beg or to steal. Every boy when he is young should learn some useful work.

But it is not enough that a boy should learn some kind of work. He should put his heart and soul completely into his work, and not waste his spare time. "Work while you work and play while you play" is as good a rule for young people as for the old.

There is no better help to diligence than the habit of early rising, which just like all other good habits is most easily formed in youth. There is an English saying, "Lost time never returns." This means that everybody must be diligent, and make good use of his time. One must study hard when he is
young so that he may make great progress, succeed in life and become useful to his country. Therefore, we say that diligence Is the mother of success.
