For a film buff like me a trip to the Grand theatre - one of the oldest cinemas in all of China –was a must during my recent visit to Shanghai. Situated in the Huangpu district of Shanghai, theGrand Theatre boasts 80 years of history and is an important part of the cinematic history of mynation. Although many parts of the building have been transformed into a modern multifunctionalcinema(现代多功能影院) with multiple movie halls there are many parts of the old structureremaining and reminders of its glorious past. For those interested in modern movies there arescreenings of all the latest blockbusters in their state-of-the-art facilities.
Meanwhile, the theatrealso serves as a museum that showcases the long history of Chinese film industry development(电影产业发展). It really does offer the best of both worlds. Taking the first step into the GrandTheatre, I was amazed at its perfect mix(完美结合) of western and Chinese traditional architecturestyles.
The overall design of the theatre is just jaw-dropping. Despite its long history, the theatre isstill mostly as complete as it used to be and moreover, it boasts the most cutting-edge(先进的)film equipment that can be found in China.
To my surprise, the theatre is more than a place towatch the latest films. In the Cultural Corridor at the theatre, I was lucky enough to learn about theeighty years of history through historical photos and documentaries. All the photos anddocumentaries really capture the essence of history so that I could absorb it within a short periodof time. I learnt how, despite the many ups and downs, the Chinese film industry has continued togrow year on year.
However, As big as our film market is nowadays, I think there is still a long wayto go before we catch up with Hollywood.
