A skill can be difficult to acuqire because the skill iteself is complex to master, or people are not talented in the aspect.
Personally, a skill that took me a long time to acuqire was cooking, one of the most fundamental survival skills for everybody. However, with the rapid development of modern society, this skill becomes less popular than before.
I learnt the skill from my mom. Last year, I decided to further my study abroad, and my mom believed it was time for me to learn cooking so that I could live independently when I went abroad. On weekends, she asked me to go to the farmer’s market to recognize different kinds of vegetables and meat. Then I watched her prepare the food in the kitchen. She taught me how to hold a knife, and cut or slice the food. Then she demonstrated how to cook a dish step by step.
It was pretty difficult for me because I had never cooked any food before. I even cut my finger a little bit with the knife when I was chopping some meat. The most difficult thing was that I wasn’t able to control the amount of salt the food needed. I put too much salt, although it seemed just a little to me. As a result, the food was too salty to swallow.
But anyway, I made some progress after a couple of months. It was a very important and meaningful skill, because I could feed myself, although it took me such a long time to master the basic skills.
Now I don’t have to rely on the restaurants or takeouts when my parents are away, and I can make some food of my own style to eat.
