Celebrities are the people who stand in the spot light and are always causing great attention wherever they go. Therefore the big influence of those famous people has made people start to be concerned about whether it is acceptable for those celebrities to express their opinions on politics publicly. Some people point out that the comment of those celebrities could set up a model for the society to sway people’s ideas to the right track and also help to ease people’s emotions in some big issues of the society. However, from my perspective, it actually could be harmful for those celebrities to express their opinions on politics in public.

First of all, famous people’s opinions may create unfairness in elections. For example, in an election of two candidates, one of the candidates is more qualified for this position, since he is more experienced and more knowledgeable and has more achievements in other previous positions, which means he has a better chance to bring benefits to this new government. However, if some superstar remarks in a TV show to support the other candidate publicly, either because they are friends privately or because this superstar is favor of the other candidate’s ideas of the new government personally, the superstar’s fans may unanimously switch to the other candidate in the election and may not care much about the actual qualification, which may eventually send the other candidate, instead of the more qualified one, into the office and which is unfair.
Moreover, those opinions on politics from those famous people could affect the government’s policy. For example, suppose the government plans to require all the companies that may create pollutions to purchase purification system to prevent the further contamination of the environment. If some celebrity decides to dislike this idea and comments publicly and negatively on this policy, because without taking serious research, he/she may think this action would be too costly and would greatly reduce the profits and thus motivation of the target companies, which eventually will harm the overall economy, his or her fans may follow his or her idea even though using more thinking may make those fans to choose to support this idea instead. In this case, with more and more fans standing by this celebrity, this remarkmay potentially become the popular idea in the society and thus may make it very difficult to carry out this policy.
It is true that celebrities could definitely produce positive influence if they could choose proper words to say in public and produce correct comment, since those fans will follow the correct lead. However, it is usually hard to require people to make the right judgement all the time, since people, including those famous people, are only expert in some areas and they cannot have enough knowledge and experience to produce correct comment on all things about politics. For example, a movie star may specialize in acting, but he/she cannot be expected to be able to know how to develop the economy; an excellent athlete may be able to beat all the other runners, but he/she may not understand the best way to enhance education. Besides, when government publishes its new policy, it may not publicize all the information which has made the government to create this new policy. Without enough information, it is getting even harder for superstars to produce proper comment.
