As a student of university that has a long break between university semesters, the university requires all students to do one of the following for one month during the break:
1) students must take a course on the subject that has no direct connection to their majors of study.
2) students must volunteer to work in the city where the university is located or their hometowns to improve some aspects of life of the city or their own town.
which one do you think is more beneficial for students in their university. Why?
选take a course:

So precious is the long break between university semesters that students tend to make full use of it. Either can students take some extra courses which are different from their own majors, or work as volunteers in the city to make some contributions to the society. As for me, I prefer working as a volunteer in my hometown.
Firstly, voluntary work is conducive to our future job. Most of the time, we only stay at school and learn knowledge from books, making us some kind of bookish. Once stepping into the society, we will have a hard time adjusting to our work, not knowing how to turn the assimilated knowledge into practice. However, for those who volunteer to work, they can attain a valuable and unforgettable experience. Obviously, employers will be prone to choose an experienced person to do a job, which means you will be more competitive if you have a relative working experience. With such an experience, you are more likely to land the job when applying for the same work with others, especially when the job has a direct connection to what you have done before.
Secondly, the city or the town will benefit as a whole. To be more specific, when you volunteer, you will participate in certain fields, and you may probably join in some non-profit organizations, such as environmental protection agency. With your participation, you get involved in protecting local environment, specifically the surroundings around your community. Naturally, your town’s sanitary condition gets improved. Consider the example of myself. Last year, I partook in my local community’s property management department in order to ameliorate the problem of prevalent litter dropping. In the first three weeks, we patrolled around, gave out leaflets and told people how diseases can be caused by throwing rubbish randomly, which effectively awake people’ s awareness of protecting the environment. Although exhausted, we were embraced with a sense of accomplishment. In the last week, the ratio of dropping rubbish decreased by 70%. Our living environment became more clean and tidy than ever.
Admittedly, students will expand their outlook by taking a new course. This brand-new field will, to some extent, promote their understanding of their own majors. However, since they just learn for one month, it will do little good to their overall comprehension. Instead, much learning burden will ensue. Thus, considering that the demerits brought by taking a new course far out-weigh its merits, it is not advisable for students to take another course.
To sum up, being a volunteer in your summer break is a smart move since it not only contributes to personal development, but also improves the community as a whole.
