The uncertainty of the education purpose of the university has sparked a fierce controversy on how to confine its practical function. Some people argue that the university should be existing for the better employment of its students. Others, however, still insist that there should be additional benefits for both individuals and society.
Indeed, the university should give its attendants an advantage when they try to hunt a job in the job market. The main reason lies in the fact that schools are the places for students to acquire the majority of the knowledge in a life-long course, the very end of which is to help these learners to adjust themselves to the different roles before they step into the society. Most of these social roles are shown as job positions in companies of all fields. If the university, as one of the terminal stations of these young people in their academic career, fails to facilitate them to find their desirable jobs, then the significance of its existence will be sharply discounted. In addition, since the tuition fee is far from low now (especiallyin some developed countries), paying more attention to the employment issue of its graduates by the university can be well justified.
However, this does not automatically mean that the main aim of university study should be just career-oriented. After all, career is just one of the most important elements of a person’s life. For this reason, the university education should have more benefits to offer to both individuals and the society as a whole.
For example, It always plays an essential role in developing the personal morality of the students, thus ensuring that the graduates are not merely technically adept but also morally right. Besides, university should also carry on some fundamental and essential researches, in the areas such as physics and astronautics, where the long-term significance for the social development can never be underestimated.
So overall, I firmly believe that university has more than one role to play, and its very first priority is notonly to train skillful professionals and guarantee them better-paid work which can be provided by some vocational colleges, but also to benefit individuals and society in a much wider sphere.
