Computers are considered by some people as a substitute for public museums and art galleries since historical objects and artworkscan be viewed online. However, I would disagree. Admittedly, the computer does deliver certain advantages. It provides enormous convenience in that people can appreciate exhibits and artifacts online regardless of time and place. For instance, some who live in the suburb, far away from a museum in the city center, may choose to enjoy valuable objects on display on the internet. On top of this, due to massive storage of computers as compared to limited space of museums and galleries, significantly more objects can be presented electronically, which allows viewers to take an aesthetic tour to their heart’
s content. However, the virtual artistic world is no match for real tours in terms of experiential and educational value. Most importantly, visitors are able to obtain first-hand experience in museums and galleries . Some museums employ professional guides to talk to their visitors, while others offer headsets so that visitors can listen to detailed commentary about the exhibition. Museums and galleries can also play an important role in teaching people about history, culture, science and so on. For instance, field trips or study sessions are often arranged for middle school students to learn in-depth cultural backgrounds of exhibits. In this way, their interest and curiosityin history and art can be aroused. In conclusion, I would argue that physical presence of museums and art galleries are of great significance to visitors so that they cannot be shut down and replaced by computers. (260) Editor’s picks:
