Indeed, music is a proper way of bringing people of different backgrounds and cultures together, but I remain doubtful on whether people of all ages share similar music tastes. In this essay, I shall discuss whether music can be served as an efficientway to encompass people from different cultures and of different ages.
In a rather globalised world like ours, English, as the academia has put it, has become a “linguafranca”, meaning the bridge language used to make communication possible between people who do not share a native language. Music has been deeply influenced by this neoliberal trend as well. With English being the “linguafranca”, songs and lyrics that were created and written in English are even more massively produced and spread worldwide. As a result, music genres like American pop, Britpop, indie rock, K-pop, and so forth have hit the world. Youngsters from all over the world can have similar or even the same tastes for music. For example, a Chinese student can share the same taste with his or her French classmates for music at a British university.
However, when it comes to age differences, I am very doubtful if this is still the case, for the elderly tend to be less dynamic than the young and they may have distinct preferences of music. For instance, the elderly like to go to the opera house where orchestra play a vital role, while young adults prefer musicals which involves more energetic dances of the performers and contains uplifting emotions of the characters. It would be a bore for both sides to choose the counterpart. Thus, I don’t consider music can bring people of different ages together.
In conclusion, music may bring people of various cultural backgrounds together, but it may not be the case for people of all ages.
