Task2
I want to shop in a large grocery store. When people shop in a specialty store, although people might be able to find something special, they might be unlikely to find all the items on the shopping list. Then they have to go to a large store. As a result, they have to spend more time on roads. Moreover, people can make price comparisons in a large store. Before buying, people can compare the prices of different brands, thereby purchasing high quality products at reasonable prices.
Task3
The letter suggests the university to write letters to alumni to ask them to donate money, which can be used to establish an art museum on campus, because this enables students to appreciate high quality art on campus. The man disagrees with the letter for two reasons. Firstly, students can take a bus to the county art museum, where they can appreciate the high quality collections. Indeed, it just takes students two bucks to purchase museum tickets and students can visit the museum for free on Mondays. Secondly, the alumni have already donated money to help build a student center and a library. It's unreasonable to ask them to donate additional money for other items.
Task4
The reading passage describes the optimal foraging, which means that when foraging, animals minimize the energy cost and maximize the nutritional benefits. The professor takes a species of bird as an example. Crows live on shellfish with a hard shell. When foraging, the birds grab a prey in the shallow water and then fly high before dropping the prey onto the rocks below in order to crack the shell open. To maximize the nutritional benefits, the birds select the biggest shellfish. To minimize the energy consumption, the birds fly to a specific height. In fact, flying to a higher height is energy-wasting while flying to a lower height means that birds have to replicate efforts. So the birds use the right amount of energy to obtain food.
Task6
The professor describes two ways by which advertising negatively affects the environment. One way is by wasting natural resources. For example, the professor received a mail advertising kitchen renovation services. Since the professor rents an apartment, it is unfeasible for her to spend money on renovating kitchen. The service provider wastes paper on producing booklets for impossible customers. The other way is by negatively affecting the natural beauty. Billboards are so ubiquitous that they prevent people from enjoying the natural beauty.
