英语的基本句型有五种，无论多么复杂的长难句，在句子“长高”之前，其实都是一些简单句。
我们先来看看一些简单句基本句型的实例：
一种：主语 ＋ 不及物动词
John came．
第二种：主语 ＋ 及物动词 ＋ 宾语
John likes English.
第三种：主语 ＋ 系动词 ＋ 主语补语
John is happy．
第四种：主语 ＋ 双宾动词 ＋ 间接宾语 ＋ 直接宾语
John gave me a book．
第五种：主语 ＋ 宾补动词 ＋ 宾语 ＋ 宾语补语
John makes his girl friend happy．

方法就是：给句子加上一些基本成份的修饰语，然后用连词连接起来。
基本成分的修饰语用定语和状语，定语是用来修饰名词的单词、短语或从句，状语是用来修饰名词或代词以外的词的单词、短语或从句。
一、定语
Poor John came.
John likes American English
John is rather happy．
John gave his girl friend many books，which are full of illustrations．
John makes his girl friend very happy．
第二状语
John often came to chat with me．
John likes English very much．
No matter what happen, John is happy．
In the library, John gave his girl friend abook．
Whatever he do，John makes his girl friend veryhappy．

学会用定语和状语写长句子，我们再来看看怎么用连接成分使句子一高再高。
连接成份实际上是一个连词，用来连接两个或几个平行的词、短语和分句，这种连词叫做并列连词，另一类连接成份是用来连接两个句子、且一个句子从属于另一个句子（即从句）的连词，这类连词叫从属连词，从属连词主要用于引导各种从句。
一个完整的句子（主句或从句）必须包含2个到4个基本成分，
此外，如果意思上有需要，还可包含一个或更多其他的句子成份。
简单句的扩展就是把简单句的主语、宾语加上一个短语（如定语）来扩展，及物动词或不及物动词也可以与其它短语（如状语）连用进行扩展。两个简单句的主语可以用and、but、both..and、either…or、neither…nor、not only…but also等连词连接组成一个简单句，但应注意主语和谓语动词的一致性。
例句：
John is flying to America. His girl friend is flying to America .
John and his girl friend are flying to America .
Both John and his girl friend are flying to America .
John is flying to England hi s girl friend is not flying to England .
John but not his girl friend is flying to England .
John may be flying to Berlin. His girl friend may be flying to Berlin.
Either John or his girl friend is flying to Berlin.
John is not flying to York. His girl friend isn’t flying to York.
Neither John nor his girl friend is flying to York.
两个简单句的宾语可由and、both…and等连词连接组成一个简单句。
例句：
I met John.I met his girl friend.
I met John and his girl friend.
I met John and his girl friend.
I didn’t meet John. I didn’t meet his girl friend.
I didn’t meet John or his girl friend.
I met neither John nor his girl friend.

长高前：Nuclearplants are clean and economical but people hold a strong negative attitudetoward them.
长高后：Nuclear plants are a clean and economical way of producing vastamounts of much-needed energy; however people, especially local residents, whoare very concerned about safety, hold a strong negative attitude toward them.
方法：增加定语of producing vast amounts ofmuch-needed energy来修饰way,添加连词however，添加especially local residents来people,再用定语从句who are very concerned aboutsafety来修饰people.这样一来，句子就被“拔高”了。

方法：用between......and......把Some people succeed和Other people fail两个短句连接起来，用两个which引导定语从句和非性定语从句，if引导条件状语从句。巧用从句，写出长句有何难？
长高前：College students are interested in grades and economic success. Theyare expected to cheat more frequently.
长高后：College students, primarilyinterested in grades and economic success, are expected to cheat morefrequently than those who graduated ten years ago and are far less concernedwith the problem of society than with their own personal future.
方法：从句primarily interested in grades and economic success来修饰College students，those who graduated ten years ago来与现在的College students做对比，and连接的句子指出College students的问题。
